Human Nature???
Posted on 18 March 2010
I’m having trouble with the concept of human nature today. There is a general sense that I keep getting that at its core human nature is really pretty screwed up. You could call it original sin or the death instinct (ala Freud). You can look at yourself and say, “Boy, I’m really self destructive.” (God knows I’ve done that.) You could look at the Health Care debate from across the Atlantic (where I happen to be right now – in Italy – a little distance never hurts) and say, “Boy, are those Americans really self destructive.”
And it would be easy to just say that a majority of Americans just don’t believe they have the right to decent medicine, to being healthy. You could say that a majority of Americans would rather suffer and die prematurely than to have at their disposal what all their representatives have the moment they get elected (what all the rich people have all the time). You could argue that at least the rich people and the people in government aren’t self destructive because they “got theirs,” but then you’d have to note that they still have to walk around in the streets (or at least take airplanes, et cetera) where disease could get them at the drop of a hat. Or (if they only use Lear jets, et cetera) where at least their children – who are taken care of by housekeepers, nannies et cetera – could have a nasty germ or two sent in their direction.
So what is it? Are we just genetically designed to be self- destructive? Have we been put together by the universe (or whatever) to run off cliffs like lemmings?
But then I look at (again – for a moment – from an Italian distance) the attack on the concept of real Health Care by the insurance, pharmaceutical and right wing industrial complex – the media, et cetera. The incredible manipulation of information and I compare it with the cathedrals I’ve been wandering through here in Italy – the endless crucifixions (the Christ died for our sins-thing so we better do a little dying too for the Church or whomever), the glittering Madonna and child images – over and over and over – and I can’t help but see some parallel…
I can’t help but connect up a dot or two around these beautiful cathedrals, the priests, the horrific child abuse sex scandals that are emerging like a pox here in Europe (not to mention the US), possibly even staining the Pope (it would be about time) – priests using children for their pleasure – and I make a strange link – a quantum strange jump perhaps – that a few people use the rest of us – hammer us with images and ideas – over and over and over again – so that we finally succumb, give up, let them have their way with us…
And then I wonder if maybe someday we will be able to wake up and realize that we are not self destructive at our core at all, but that so many of us are being (or have been) destroyed – from an early age on, like those poor children in the shadows of their altars — being damaged, being fooled, being buried alive in pain and confusion. That at the very core we are good, hopeful, healing – at the very, very core. And that from that core we can perhaps begin someday, if we can wake ourselves up and grow ourselves up, start really healing ourselves (which I suspect we have to do together, by the way) and then we can heal our leaders into really taking care of the situation they were elected to take care of, rather than raping us from the position we put them in. And then after that maybe we can begin healing this planet rather than raping it as well (which I would submit will also have to be done together)

“perhaps a few people use the rest of us – hammer us with images and ideas – over and over and over again”
Isn’t that the definition of power as we know it?
I could elaborate a list of things and ideas that’s been haunting human race for five thousand years, and all of them come from one big idea: CONTROL.
The things we think we do and do not deserve, the cruel and inexplicable “God’s will”, sins, hell, heaven…you name it. Ideas that made us the mare lambs we are now. Impotent, small, submissive, victims.
Hm…I could spend the day here, but it’s YOUR blog not mine…and this is a comment form, not a post one.
Have a good day.
Always feel free to write as long as want here. I couldn’t agree with you more. Except…I think most of us have been lambs from the start of the species. There have always been a few people in charge (generally liars, ie: God said I should be in charge -or- my Dad was in charge so I should be in charge – or – what do you think of this sword I have in my hand??)
They important thing is to grow up, I guess. For all of us to grow up. Easier said than done (I’ve found).
Please take this response in the spirit it was intended. I’m not attacking or being ugly, but simply stating a position.
Our country is never going to come together until we stop trying to cast our opponents disagreements as greed, or simple obstruction, or some conspiracy between a political party and Corporate America.
The fact is that we are bankrupt. We have no money. We simply can’t keep borrowing money. Republicans are not evil. They are often spineless, but not evil. They are just saying that we can’t keep dumping everything on government hoping for the best.
I always laugh when the President says that his plan will keep Medicare solvent for another 10 years. Ok. So what do we do in 10 years if everyone is on a government healthcare plan? All we are doing is prolonging the inevitable, and I don’t see how that helps anybody.
I really appreciate your warmth and kindness. Critical in these debates, I agree. The more empathy that exists, the better. For instance, re my above response to Mercedes. I don’t think the people in charge are any happier than the people they control. I think the guy with “the sword” in his “hand” – so he can stay in charge of a tribe, or a city or a nation – is anything but scared, really and believing that by having power, that by being in control he (or she) will be more comfortable. It turns out never to be true (certainly not from what I’ve seen.) Shakespeare explored a lot of this — he did it quite lyrically. You just can’t really get away with treating other human’s badly (Lear, McBeth).
The pain is on both sides of “the street.” But the only way to address pain is directly and sometimes I think that can be painful and at times tough. And still what is being used here by me (and others) are words (and some pictures).
My big question is “Who voted for these “”people” ” that say that gay militaries are the consequence of a bad working army in Europe (The Netherlands, Belgium, France etc), that healthcare is only for the rich and super rich, that instead of withrawing it’s army, is sending more, where CIA, FBI and NSA is working together (and that the president is not aware of, hmhm…)I still believe in the kindness of human nature and nature in general. The problem is that no one in the US as civilians (you guys) have the balls to stand with miljons against a gouvernement that is ruining you and your country, lowering down the US dollar to up 1, 50 €, making Europe stronger then we ever been….the people need to take action. It’s miljons against what, 10.000 gouvernement people? Look what is happening in Greece, if the people wake up, the gouvernement has to move along
…you need to do the same, or America is doomed for a looooong way of poverty…
You all make absolutely wonderful points:
Mercedes, yes, none of this is new. Control is part of the issue but I think (perhaps you’ll agree) that it is also that we have found it far too easy to just be sheep.
Bryan, absolutely we are bankrupt and we need to stop borrowing money for our great-grandchildren to try and pay back as they are forced to borrow as well. I see so many people using cash these days, pay the bills and spend only what you have. I know this means less money being put into the economic cycle but hey, we, all of us need to start acting responsibly before it is too late – our government would do well to follow suit.
Amy, I love your astute observation. Yes, we voted for these idiots, based our votes on what we wanted to believe at the time to quiet our own conscience. I’m sure we would do well to rise up and throw all these guys out and start over. Unfortunately – we’ve all of us become sheep!
Stephen, thank you for voicing once again what is in the hearts and minds of so many of us. You have the ability to utilize your director’s voice to bring some of this through the media back to the public’s eye. We all of us need to be re-awakened, as we are sheep; we are in desperate need of an out spoken leader!
Thanks Sheryl…
Now please make Stephen notice that he’d posted it twice. My obsessive-compulsive disorder can’t handle seeing it. It’s killing me! (kidding…I’m not OCD) lol!
Mercedes,
I noticed the same and have been wondering to myself if his thoughts were just so pressing that he couldn’t help himself.
I have to admit I am guilty of this when trying to get a point across to one of my teens (though the oldest just turned 20.)
Sorry guys. I didn’t see it, till right now. I was in Italy — to much red wine and beautiful art?? I’ll take care of it now, though it’s a little late in the game. Better late than never.
I’m back in the states now. A little more “order,” perhaps. Oh, and then there’s Italy, by the way — no more beautiful place in the world and so, so corrupt it is hard to believe. Maybe we will all, somehow, grow up and take the responsibility that we should take.
Was that a vacation or were you filming something? Or did a dream lead you visit Orvieto as my dreams have been taking me on trips lately? Tell us more about it.
And I think what you repeated will bear repetition, so no worries. It would be good to leave it there.
I tried to warn you via DM on Twitter, but that’s so not important.
Glad you’re back though.
I don`t think this discussion serves the purpose, want it or not there can be no definitive answers, definitions or interpretations of or in terms of human nature…
